UVI Battles Division-I North Alabama In An Exhibition

ST. THOMAS, V.I.   The University of the Virgin Islands Men's Basketball Team welcomed the University of North Alabama to the Sports & Fitness Center Saturday afternoon for an exhibition matchup and the NCAA Division-I Lions won 99-47. 

Playing a Division-I school, this game did not count towards the Buccaneers' overall record but it did put a "one" in the win column for North Alabama.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UVI got a majority of its points from the charity stripe. The Buccaneers were 25-of-35 from the line. Chris Williams made all eight free throws and Jamari Williams made five-of-six from the stripe. Meanwhile, North Alabama attempted nine free throws, making eight.

  • Free throws from Chris Williams made it a 16-14 game with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Previously, UVI trailed 13-4 before Jamal Norris hit threes on consecutive possessions and Will Boyd capitalized with a layup on a LiWayne Richardson steal and Jaren Johnson assist.

  • It was "Bombs Away" for the Lions who attempted 37 three-pointers and made 13. In fact, North Alabama made more threes than the Buccaneers made field goals (10).

  • The tides changed with a 17-3 run by the Lions, which turned a 23-18 advantage into a 40-21 halftime score. Then, North Alabama opened the second period by scoring the first 15 points.

STAT FACTS

  • Norris led the team with 14 points. Boyd had eight points and eight rebounds. Richardson had eight points with seven boards, two blocks, and a steal. 

  • Chris Williams added eight points and four rebounds. Denny Gonzalez had two steals and a block, while Johnson had two assists with four boards.

  • North Alabama had four players off the bench score in double-digits, led by a game-high 20 points from Daniel Ortiz, who went six-of-eight from the field, including a perfect four-for-four from long range. His six assists and four steals were also game-highs.
